Dalsland's first ironworks was founded in Upperud. Together with our knowledgeable Dalsland guide, you will stroll among the historic industrial buildings and experience history that features both a genius canal builder and a French princess.
Beautifully situated on a hill in Upperud, the Dalsland Museum of Art blends perfectly into the old industrial environment. This is the starting point for our guided walk through 300 years of history. Upperud was home to Dalsland's first ironworks and the harbour for Bäckefors Works. Even the museum’s Café Bonaparte is named after Princess Christine Charlotte Alexandrina Egypta Bonaparte.
We stroll down the main street, passing the manor house, workers' dwellings, and old warehouses down to the locks, which have been in operation since 1868 when the Dalsland Canal was inaugurated. Dalsland's history is shaped by its many industrial works and the beautiful waterway that has transported goods and people through rivers and lakes across the region.
